Okay, but before that, listen to Anello for some inspiration in the video where she gives 5 tips for new bloggers and also to crush your social media profiles.
1. How to Start Your Own Blog?
To start a blog, you will need to work through the given steps:
- Picking a Blog Name – Choosing a good blog name is one of the most important steps for a successful blogger. Far too often, new bloggers pick a random name too quickly, register a domain and start publishing content.
I’ve had the same experience only to find out months later that the chosen blog name is not the right one. So do not rush things but take some time to critically examine your blog name.
Go for a short and catchy one and do not use HYPHENS in your domains. Use keywords that target your specific area or Niche.
2. Where to Register Your Domain?
The next step for you to get your blog online and making it genuinely recognizable is to:
- Register It And Get Hosting – Domain names are so important in business. Every company, whether it is small, medium or a huge enterprise, requires a strong online presence in this interconnected world. Your domain name serves as the internet real estate for your business and would need to make its mark among the consumers.
Keep reading to equip yourself about domain hosting, its importance, essential features, and common uses. Domain hosting may sound a bit confusing initially but do not panic.
It, in fact, combines the two concepts of domain name registration and web hosting. Which means a provider of domain hosting will deliver both the Domain Registration and the Hosting Services for your website.
Web hosting, on the other hand, refers to the process of providing various technologies and services required to run your website.
Primarily, it includes the whole space of one or more physical servers. This can further be enhanced by the addition of bandwidth, installation of different scripts, plugins, and crew support, etc.
In domain hosting, the provider assigns a domain name along with these services. Without a domain name, your website or blog will not be accessible to the public.
All functionalities of a website then depend on the given resources which are accessible through the registered domain only. Because of these reasons, finding a proper Hosting Provider that offers full support becomes necessary.
There’re tons of Hosting Providers available online today and the number keeps increasing with each passing year. Some of the best Hosting Providers are given. You can click each of them to suit your preference.
Choosing any one of the above platforms and by signing up, you’re well on your way to get excellent Hosting along with a Domain.
You may click this A2 Hosting banner and check their site for an informed idea. It is up to 20x faster web hosting.
I personally use the Wealthy Affiliate and am a proud member of this Hosting Platform.
3. Customize Your Blog
Things get even better. Customizing the look and feel of your blog is by far one of the most interesting and rewarding parts in the journey of creating your WordPress site.
Sites like Hostgator, Joomla, Bluehost, Wix, and Drupal, etc. also offer many themes. But I encourage you to go for the WordPress themes if you’re a novice. Moreover, WordPress themes are beginner-friendly and easy to use.
You can install so many pre-made WordPress themes on your site. Some of them are free, while others are paid.
You can also change your theme by going to your WordPress Dashboard and clicking on Appearance>> Themes shown below:
Go ahead and click on the Add New button.
On the next screen, you will able to search from 5000+ free WordPress themes that are available in the official WordPress.org themes directory.
In this example, we are installing the GeneratePress theme. It is compatible with all major page builders, including Elementor and Beaver Builder.
It is also lightweight and mobile-friendly. Ensure that the theme you’re installing is feather-light and mobile-friendly because of many people using mobile phones, browsing and searching for what they want on the internet.
Thanks to the emphasis of GeneratePress theme on WordPress coding standards. It is in full compatibility with all well-coded plugins, including WooCommerce. You can sort by popular, latest, featured or other feature filters.
Take your mouse over to any theme if you’re not satisfied with the look and feel of GeneratePress theme shown here, and you will see a Preview button.
Clicking on will open the theme preview where you can see how it would look on your website. Go ahead and install one for your choice.
After that, the install button will be replaced with an Activate button. You need to click on it to Activate the theme and that’s it.
Now, you can customize it more by clicking on the Customize link under the Appearance menu. It even gets better to find out what’s coming up next!
4. Write And Publish Your Post
Here comes the fun part. To write your first blog post, click on the Posts >> Add New menu in your WordPress Dashboard.
When I was starting out, I didn’t know that the title of my article was in the H1 tag. So, you should note this and write a few lines as the introductory part of your post.
This beginning part of your post is the Meta description where you should be mentioning your title to make it as an optimized introduction for mighty Google.
In the opening part of this very article you’re reading on, you have seen how I have mentioned the title shown by the arrow below:
I have deliberately mentioned the title again for Google to crawl on my page and get ranked. You should be doing the same as you write your first blog.
This process is called optimizing your blog post. Refer to the tutorials above for further reading.
That said, you will see an editor area where you can write your first blog post.
After you’re done writing, go ahead and click on the Publish button on the right to publish your first blog post to the world.
If you want more revision, you will simply hit on the Save Draft button that you find just below the Publish button.
The best practice is to revise your draft again to avoid any grammatical errors or missing points.
5. Promote Your Blog
If you’re just starting out, you may not have enough clue to promote your brand new blog post. That’s quite natural for everybody. Moreover, if you don’t have the traffic coming in, all of your efforts are a waste of time.
With that said, here are a few essential tips to help you take action and start promoting your blog content the right way and increase visibility.
Search engine optimization is inevitably vital for all bloggers. When you optimize your web pages including your blog posts, you’re making your website more visible to your audience.
And people are looking for specific keywords associated with a product or a service through the search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo?
Your goal is, therefore, to ensure that every blog post you create allows
- Visitors to have an enjoyable experience finding their way around your site
- Search engines to find and index your site
After having created your optimized post, your next step is to promote it and share it to many places as possible. Include your blog link to your social media profiles like Pinterest, Instagram, Your Blog Facebook Page, Twitter, Reddit, Stumble Upon(MiX) and many more.
Look up the 25 fantastic places where you can promote your blog for free and thank me later.
6. Include a Contact Form to Collect Emails
One of the best practices for a successful blog is the inclusion of a Contact Form for collecting your subscribers in your list. The simple reason is that Money is in the List.
You may have a thousand visitors to your blog but if you do not have a list to contact and build the relationship, you’re failing miserably on the Wealth Building scenario.
To do so, go to your WordPress Dashboard and select Plugins >> Add Plugin from the menu. Then type Contact Form 7 into the search function. Once the Contact Form 7 plugin is displayed, click Install >> then Activate.
Once it’s activated, you can find the plugin’s functionality in the new Contact Area of your WordPress Dashboard. Have the following YouTube video handy to install your Contact Form 7.
7. Optimize Every Image You Upload
There are three things to take into account when it comes to optimizing your images. Images uploaded on your blog post or page without proper optimization slow down the loading speed of your site and thereby, send your visitors away.
Whenever you upload an image, stick on performing 3 things –
- Dimensions – Ensure that your image fits into the right size for your blog page. For example, on my blog, I make sure the images are 600px wide or less, so they fit in with the theme and design.
- File size – Compress your image files with a tool like TinyPNG or Kraken before uploading to WordPress. These programs can reduce the file size by as much as 65% – 70% and help to make your blog load and run faster.
A site that loads fast is just awesome and retains the readers for long. Your goal should be to own a site that loads lightning fast! And this is where the size of your images come into play.
Do not forget to compress your image and retain the standard file size.
- Alt Text – Always add a meaningful description to the Alt Text on your images. This helps visually impaired readers understand what the image relates to, and it also helps search engines index your images.
For example, in the above image, the description of the Alt Text was’File size image.png’.
8. Set Up Your Google Analytics
The next step for you is to set up a Google Analytics account for your blog. It is best to install Google Analytics when starting your blog, so you can study how much your blog has grown over time.
It also helps you see how many people are visiting your blog, where they are coming from, and what are they doing on your website?
You will be required to visit the Google Analytics website and sign in using your Gmail account. Once logged in, you can go ahead and sign up for a free Google Analytics account.
After you sign up, you will be asked to place your Tracking Code on your blog. No worries. The video below will help you do that.
Now that you have also set up your Google Analytics tracking code, you’re going to be a proud blogger. So waste no more time to start seeing some real results!
9. Make Money Blogging
The next step is to make money, right? Of course, you do. Whether it’s a hobby blog or a business blog, you can make some real cash with time and experience.
But it’s not a get rich quick ordeal. It needs persistence and consistency. If you do it right, you could make enough to support your family and more.
Let’s dive in and see how you can make a good profit with your blog:
One of the most common ways bloggers make money is through placing ads on their sites. Monetize your blog with CPC or CPM Ads.
- CPC/PPC Ads: Cost per click (also called pay per click) ads are usually banners that you place in your blog post or sidebar. Each time a visitor clicks on the ad, you are paid for that click.
- CPM Ads: CPM Ads or Cost Per 1,000 Impressions are ads that pay you a fixed amount of money based on how many people had viewed your ad.
Wola, that’s interesting, right?
You can also include Affiliate Links in your content. You can do this directly in the content or through banner ads. If a reader clicks on your unique link and buys the product you have recommended, you earn a good commission.
Perhaps, you may also sell some Digital Products directly on your blog by activating a WooCommerce Store. Observe how I have included a Shop Now button in the menu above.
It’s a joy to see someone buying a product from my own WooCommerce store. You can do this.
