This page shows you how to build a website step by step. If you follow the basic steps shown herein, you’re going to own a stunning website.
For this example, we’re using WordPress, the most popular open-source CMS(Content Management System) on the web.
If you have not used WordPress before, you can see the details here.
Soon as you arrive in the Dashboard, you will notice your WordPress site as shown in the image below:
But before advancing further, watch the YouTube video below to give you a solid foundation. It shows you the basic requirements for building up a stunning website.
With the illustrated 3 steps above, we may now proceed further to add some more features to your site. Now, carry your mouse upward to the left-hand side and click on the Posts just beneath the Dashboard icon.
It is in this button that you will add your killing content for your clients and potential customers by pressing the Add New tab.
From here, go ahead and write as many posts as you want but remember that the content that you offer gives great value to your readers.
The next step is to add some basic plugins to keep your website rolling without any glitches. You’re encouraged to install the Yoast and EWWW Image Optimizer plugins.
Why should you install Yoast?
Yoast SEO is one of the most widely used WordPress plugins and it’s easy to understand. Whether you’re running a personal blog or you’re an SEO professional who creates websites for clients.
Yoast is a powerful tool that can help you make the best out of your site and search engine-friendly. It’s the most comprehensive SEO-related WordPress plugin, and the best part is – it’s FREE!
You do have the option to buy premium Yoast SEO extensions for some extra functionality, but its most important functions are stacked in the free version.
Complete installation and setup of Yoast can be referred here for further reading.
Installing the EWWW Image Optimizer
EWWW Image Optimizer is an awesome plugin that helps the loading speed of all your images on your WordPress site.
Note that unoptimized images slow down the loading speed and nobody wants to visit a website that loads slower than 3 seconds and the visitors never return.
Increased page speeds can result in better search engine rankings, and will also improve conversion rates. It will also save you storage space and bandwidth.
EWWW I.O. will automatically optimize new images that you upload, and can also optimize all the images that you have already uploaded and hence, optionally convert your images to the best file format.
This plugin gives you everything you need for an optimized image and some of the functions you get from the plugin are:
- No speed limit and unlimited file size. Automatic Background Optimization and optional Parallel Optimization makes your site get rid of upload delays.
- Its High Torque brings you the best compression ratio available with our lossy options for JPG, PNG, and PDF files.
- The free parking enables any JPG or PNG to convert to Google’s next-generation image format.
For a complete guide and automatic resizing, you can refer WordPress Ewww image optimizer URL here.
Get some more juicy part of the plugin by watching and following the instructions from the YouTube video below:
Now that you’ve seen how the plugin works, it time to dive a bit deeper for some more awesome ways to keep your website fabulous!
Websites with your own identity perform better and people know that you’re transparent and not a scammer. Appending your photo on your Sidebar or the Header is a good gesture to proving the authenticity of your site.
For this, go to your Posts and click Add New on the left. Give the title of your post as Sidebar Photos and write About Me photos on the description as shown:
Now grab a photo by clicking the Add Media box and upload that in the description area. Then copy the code of your photo by clicking the Text area and not the Visual area on top of your editor.
Remember that all images and custom links are inserted by clicking the Text area. Next, go to the Appearance and hit the Widget.
This will pull up the widgets of the Sidebar. Scroll down to grab the Arbitrary Text box and place it on top of the other widgets. Normally, your photo is to place on top of the rest of the other widgets for firsthand sight.
Title your text as About Me and paste the copied code on the content. You may even add a short synopsis like Hello and Welcome etc. along with the code and do not forget to click the Save button.
From there, visit your website and you should be proud to find your photo on the Sidebar.
Installing the Contact Form 7 plugin for your subscribers
Your website isn’t complete unless you set up a Contact Form to collect emails from your subscribers. For this, head over to your Dashboard and bring your mouse to the plugins below the Appearance as shown by the image:
Search for the plugin “Contact Form 7”. Click “Install” and then “Activate” to start using it. Click on “Contact” in your WordPress Dashboard left side menu pane.
You will see that Contact Form 7 comes up preconfigured with one form already set up to use. You may use the basic form simply by copying the code at the top of the form.
You can change where the email is sent to by changing the email address under the “Mail” section in the “To:” Heading.
On clicking the contact form, you will be shown a code that is ready for you. Paste the code into a post, page or text widget that you’d like the form displayed on, and click “save” or “update“. Look at the form shown in the image below:
The above is the contact form that you can start filling in straight away to reach me out for any queries. If you have any questions, fill your details and I will be happy to answer you in the quickest possible time.
Set up your account at Google Search Console
Your next step is to head over to Google Search Console so that your website is correctly crawled and indexed by Google. For this, you will need this URL > www.google.com/webmasters or open Google Search in your browser and type the same URL.
Click the sign-in button if you already have a Gmail account. If not, you will need to open a new account by following the prompts to log in.
Next, fill in your website and click on the Add Property. Google will now require to verify that you own the website.
There are two options – the Recommended method and the Alternate methods to verify. I encourage you to verify it using the Alternate Method as it is easier.
Simply Copy and Paste the HTML Code given under the Alternate method by going to your WordPress Dashboard. Click on the Appearane>editor as shown:
On clicking the ‘editor’ button you’re taken to the page where you find the Theme Header(header.php).
Now paste the copied HTML code of Google just below the opening <head> tag or anywhere before the closing tag. As you can see the opening head tag is indicated by <head> and the closing head tag is by </head>(i.e. a slash sign).
Given below is the (header.php) showing the opening and closing of the Theme Header of your WordPress Dashboard:
Head back to Google Webmaster tools and click the verify button. You should be proud to see your verified website.
The next step is to add your sitemap to index your site. A sitemap is a list of your pages that are crawled by search engines. When adding the sitemap, add only the sitemap.xml file and not the whole URL.
